Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine) is used to
treat depression. Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine) is working by adjusting the balance of the brain's natural chemical messengers, especially serotonin and norepinephrine.
How should this medicine be used?
The recommended starting dosage for Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine) is 15 mg a day,
administered in a single dose.
It usually is taken once a day at bedtime. It may be taken
with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor in case you do not
understand. Do not take more or less only exactly as directed.
Patients not responding to the initial 15mg dose may benefit from dose increases
up to a maximum of 45 mg a day.
What side effects can this medication cause?
- anxiousness
- drowsiness
- feeling dizzy
- confusion
- upset stomach
- increased appetite
- dry mouth
- constipation
- vomiting
If you experience any of the following symptoms , call your doctor immediately:
- fast heartbeat
- fever, chills, flu symptoms, sore throat, mouth sores
- chest pain
- seizures
What special precautions should I follow?
- tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially
diazepam and vitamins. Do not
take Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine) if you are taking an MAO inhibitor
like phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate).
These drugs mmust be stopped 14 days before starting Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine).
- tell your doctor if you (or anyone in your family
has or has ever had,) have or have ever had depression, bipolar disorder, mania, thought about
suicide.
- tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart or liver disease, heart attack,
high cholesterol or low blood pressure.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine), call your
doctor.
- if you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine).
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Generic Remeron (Mirtazapine).
- you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or
until you know how this drug affects you.
- remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
You should know that your mental health may change,
especially at the beginning of your treatment and at any time your dose is
increased/decreased. You should call your
doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- thinking about harming yourself
- extreme worry
- worsening depression
- panic attacks
- sleep difficulties
- irritability
- aggressive behavior
- restlessness
- abnormal excitement
