Why is this medication prescribed?
Lasix, a 'water pill,' is used reduce fluid retention and swelling
as a result of conditions such as heart or liver disease, nephrotic syndrome and chronic
kidney failure.
It is also used to treat high blood pressure. Lasix works by blocking the
absorption of salt and fluid in the kidney tubules, causing the kidneys to
get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.
How should this medicine be used? Typically you
will be prescribed between 20-80mg of Lasix a day.
You should only use Lasix as directed by your
doctor.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask
your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Take
Lasix exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
increase in urine
output may last for up to 6 hours after a dose and
should decrease after you take it for a few weeks. Tell your doctor if
any of these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- low blood pressure
- muscle cramps
- weakness
- water and electrolyte depletion
- feeling dizzy
- confusion
- thirst
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- blurred vision
- headache
- constipation
If you have any of the following symptoms, call your doctor
immediately:
- sore throat
- ringing in the ears
- anemia, or other blood disorders
- fever
- hearing difficulties
- a skin rash
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
What special precautions should I follow?
- Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Lasix, sulfa
drugs, or any other drugs.
- Lasix should be avoided by
patients with kidney failure. The sudden loss of fluid and
electrolytes may cause deterioration in kidney function that can
result in going into a coma.
- Lasix may
cause reduced levels of magnesium and potassium in the blood.
This may contribute to heart rhythm problems.
- Lasix (Furosemide) reduces the
kidney's ability to excrete lithium, and can result a lithium toxicity.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. Do not breast-feed while taking Lasix (Furosemide). If you become
pregnant while taking Lasix (Furosemide), call your doctor immediately.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear
protective clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses. Lasix (Furosemide) may make your skin
sensitive to sunlight.
