Why is this medication prescribed?
Lamivir (Generic 3TC) (Epivir) is used in combination with other medications to treat
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Lamivir (Generic 3TC) (Epivir-HBV) is used to
treat hepatitis B infection. It works by stopping the
spread of the HIV and hepatitis B viruses.
Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir) is not a cure and may not
decrease the number of HIV-related illnesses.
How should this medicine be used?
Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir) comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth.
Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir)
is usually taken twice a day every 12 hours.
Lamivir (Generic 3TC) (Epivir-HBV) is usually taken once a day.
Follow the directions on your prescription
label carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part
you do not understand. Take Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir) exactly as directed. Do not take
more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
Continue to take Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir) even if you feel good. Do not stop taking
Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir) without talking to your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if any of these
following symptoms are severe:
- headache
- fatigue
- diarrhea
- chills
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- dizziness
- sleeping difficulties
- cough
- depression
- stuffy nose
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- skin rash
- stomach pain
- vomiting (in children)
- upset stomach (in children)
- numbness, tingling, or burning in the fingers or toes
- fever
- muscle pain
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir),
- Tell your doctor about all kinf of
medications you are taking, especially trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole
(Bactrim, Septra), and vitamins.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had hepatitis B, kidney
disease, or pancreas disease.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or
if you are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir),
call your doctor immediately. You should not breast-feed while taking Lamivir (Generic 3TC / Epivir).
