Why is this medication prescribed?
Generic Risperdal is used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia.
It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
Generic Risperdal is in a class of
medications called atypical antipsychotics.
How should this medicine be used?
It is usually taken twice
a day with or without food. Start dosage is usually 1mg 2 times daily. Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not
understand. Take Risperdal exactly as directed.
Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- heartburn
- weight gain
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- constipation
- dizziness
- muscle stiffness
- anxiety
- runny nose
- difficulty urinating
- agitation
- drowsiness
- sleeping difficulties
- decreased sex drive
- tremors
- cough
- sore throat
- muscle pain
If you experience any of the
following side effects , call your
doctor immediately:
- confusion
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- sweating
- difficult speech
- jerky movements
- faintness
- painful erection that lasts for hours
- seizures
- difficulty swallowing
- shuffling walk
- a skin rash
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Generic Risperdal ,
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Generic Risperdal or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor if you use or have ever used drugs or drink large
amounts of alcohol, or have ever had Alzheimer's disease, angina, blood pressure, breast cancer,
difficulty swallowing, irregular heartbeat, heart failure, phenylketonuria, seizures, liver or kidney disease, or diabetes.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. If you
become pregnant while taking Generic Risperdal , call your doctor.
Do not breastfeed
while taking Generic Risperdal .
- if you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking Generic Risperdal .
- Generic Risperdal may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know
how this drug affects you.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear
protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Generic Risperdal may make your skin
sensitive to sunlight.
- You may have increases in your blood sugar
(hyperglycemia) while you are taking Generic Risperdal, even if you do not
already have diabetes.
- Generic Risperdal may make it harder for your body to cool
down when it gets very hot or warm up when it gets very cold. Tell your doctor
if you plan to exercise or be exposed to extreme heat or cold.
