Why is this medication prescribed?
Prevacid (Generic Lansoprazole) is used to treat ulcers; gastroesophageal reflux
disease (GERD); and problems related to excess stomach,
such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and H. pylori.
How should this Prevacid be used?
It is usually taken once a day before food.
The capsules must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew.
What side effects can Prevacid cause?
Cases of hair thinning and photosensitivity have also been reported.
Other reported reactions include jaundice, hepatitis, interstitial nephritis
(sometimes resulting in renal failure), wheezing, bruising, depression, blurred vision,
taste disturbances, vertigo, confusion and hallucinations. Gynaecomastia and impotence
may occur with long term use.
During clinical trials a small number of patients developed
abnormal liver function tests (predominantly gamma-GT) while on lansoprazole, however,
routine monitoring of liver function tests is not required.
Tell your doctor if
one of these side effects is severe or does not go away:
- stomach pain
- diarrhea
- headache
- taste disturbances
- nausea
- dizziness
- sore throat
If you experience any of the following side effects, call your doctor immediately:
- a skin rash
- blurred vision
- confusion
- fainting
- breath difficulties
- swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
Prevacid special precautions
Before taking Lanzap (Generic Lansoprazole),
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Prevacid (Generic Lansoprazole).
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are
taking, especially the following: ketoconazole (Nizoral) , digoxin , ampicillin,
theophylline, and vitamins containing iron.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Prevacid (Generic Lansoprazole), call your
doctor.
- If you are taking Carafate (sucralfate), take it at least one hour after
Prevacid (Generic Lansoprazole).
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver or kidney disease.
