Why is this medication prescribed? Generic Aventyl (Pamelor) is used to treat depression.
It works by stopping re-uptake of certain
excitatory chemicals into brain cells. These chemicals then
accumulate and are able to have a stimulatory effect on the brain.
How should this medicine be used?
Your doctor will tell you how much Generic Aventyl (Pamelor) you need to take each day. It is important that you take Generic Aventyl (Pamelor) as directed by your doctor. Do not take more than the recommended dose.
Can be taken with or without food.
What side effects can this medication cause? Side effects from Generic Aventyl (Pamelor) are common:
- drowsiness
- weakness or tiredness
- excitement,anxiety
- insomnia
- nightmares
- dry mouth
- skin more sensitive to sunlight
- upset stomach
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not
go away:
- constipation
- difficulty urinating
- frequent urination
- blurred vision
- changes in sex drive or ability
- excessive sweating
If you experience any of the following symptoms , call your doctor immediately:
- irregular heartbeat
- muscle spasms
- difficult to speech
- fever
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- skin rash
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking nortriptyline (Primox),- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to nortriptyline or any other drugs.
- tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfites.
- Do not take nortriptyline (Pamelor) in
conjunction with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). This is known
to cause convulsions and even can cause death.
- Discontinue any MAOI’s for at least 14 days before you start taking nortriptyline (Pamelor).
- Do not take nortriptyline (Pamelor) if you have history of heart disease, urinary
retention, seizures, or thyroid problems.
- Drinking alcohol should be done with caution.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking nortriptyline (Pamelor), call your doctor immediately.
