Why is this medication prescribed? Doxt is used to treat bacterial infections
in the body such as acne, interstitial cystitis, chlamydia, pelvic
inflammatory disease, inhalational anthrax and other conditions.
Some people have used this medication containing doxycycline as a
preventative against contracting malaria while travelling in
countries with a high prevalence of the disease. Some have also
experienced unwanted side effects from this course of treatment. You
are advised to speak to your doctor before taking this course of
action.
Doxt is ineffective in treating viral infections such as the
common cold and influenza.
How should this medicine be used? Typically dosage levels for adults is 1
tablet daily. The correct dosage will depend on the condition you
are taking Doxt for. You are advised to follow your doctor's
directions. Doxt is best taking with a large glass of water to
prevent stomach irritation. It is also best taken on an empty
stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hour after a meal. It may be
taken with food if you find Doxt causes stomach upsets. Do not
break or crush the tablet.
What side effects can this medication cause? Unwanted side effects can occur
when taking this medication. You may experience
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- an inflammation of the mouth or tongue
- enterocolitis
- increased skin sensitivity to the sunlight
What special precautions should I follow? Generally, taking anti-biotics as
preventatives is not advised. The body's immune systems can build a
resistance to the anti-biotic reducing its effectiveness in fighting
infection.
Oral contraceptive pills containing estrogen may not work
properly while taking Doxt. You may need to use alternative
methods of contraception while taking Doxt.
Taking Doxt during pregnancy or while breast feeding is not
recommended. You should talk to your doctor about alternative
medications or specific dosage levels that may reduce the risk of
harming your baby.
