Why is this medication prescribed?
Dilantin is used for the treatment of epilepsy.
Dilatin acts on the brain and nervous system in the treatment of
epilepsy.
Dilantin is prescribed to control grand mal seizures and temporal lobe seizures and
may also be used to prevent and treat seizures occurring during and
after neurosurgery.
How should this medicine be used?
The dosage will depend on your condition. Dilantin should be
taken with a full glass of water.
wallow the tablets whole,do not open, crush, or chew. Follow the directions on your prescription label
carefully, and ask your doctor to explain any part you do not
understand. Take Dilatin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if
any of these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- nausea
- vomiting
- headache
- drowsiness
- bleeding and swelling of the gums
- upset stomach
- constipation
- stomach pain
- loss of taste and appetite
- weight loss
- difficulty swallowing
- vision problems
- sleeping difficulties
- nervousness
If you experience any of the following side effects, call your
doctor immediately:
- a skin rash
- bloody nose
- slurred speech
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- dark urine
- sore throat
- swollen glands
- fever
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Dilatin,
- Do not take Dilantin more than prescribed, this can cause serious illness
and even death.
- Do not take this medication
if you suffer from liver damage.
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Dilatin or any
other drugs.
- Tell your doctor what
medications you are taking, especially other seizure medications,
antacids, anticoagulants
('blood thinners'), heart medications, medications for anxiety,
medications for colds or allergies, and medications for depression.
- This medication should be used with caution in patients with severe myocardial insufficiency and hypotension
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had irregular heartbeat;
problems with your blood sugar; low
blood pressure; a blood disorder; kidney, liver,
or heart disease.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Dilatin, call your
doctor.
- If you are having surgery, tell the doctor that you are taking Dilatin.
- Dilatin may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or
operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
- Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
