Why is this medication prescribed?
Toprol (Betaloc) is used to treat high blood pressure, heart attacks and
to prevent angina.
It works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing the blood
vessels so that the heart does not have to pump as hard.
Toprol (Betaloc) is in a class of medications called beta blockers.
How should this medicine be used? The dose of beta-blocker will be
different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the
directions on the label . The following information includes only
the average doses. If your dose is different, do not change it
unless your doctor tells you to do so. Do not miss any doses. This
is especially important when you are taking only one dose per day.
Some conditions may become worse if this medicine is not taken
regularly.
It is usually taken once or twice a day with
food or immediately after food. The extended-release tablet is usually taken
once a day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and
ask your doctor to explain any part you do not understand. Take
Toprol (Betaloc) exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Tell your doctor if any of
these side effects are severe or do not go away:
- dizziness
- lightheadedness
- dry mouth
- stomach pain
- heartburn
- tiredness
- depression
- upset stomach
- constipation
If you experience any of The following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- breath difficulties
- wheezing
- a skin rash
- swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- fainting
- rapid, or irregular heartbeat
What special precautions should I follow?
Before taking Toprol (Betaloc),
- Tell your doctor medications you are taking, especially the following:
paroxetine (Paxil); reserpine (Serpasil, Serpalan, ) quinidine (Quinidex); fluoxetine (fluoxetine, Sarafem);
and propafenone (Rythmol).
- Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Toprol (Betaloc) or any
other medications.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had an overactive
thyroid gland; a slow heart rate; heart or liver disease; diabetes; or asthma or other lung
disease.
- Alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this medication.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking Toprol (Betaloc), call your
doctor immediately.
- Toprol (Betaloc) may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or
operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
