Why is this medication prescribed?
Antidep (Generic Tofranil), an antidepressant, is used to treat depression.
It is also help to treat bulimia, attention deficit disorder in children,
obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.
How should this medicine be used?
Initially, 75mg daily in divided doses increased gradually to 150-200mg daily if necessary;300mg is given only in severely depresses patient.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Common side effects:
- upset stomach
- drowsiness
- weakness
- excitement/anxiety
- insomnia
- nightmares
- dry mouth
- skin more sensitive to sunlight
- changes in appetite
Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not
go away:
- constipation
- difficulty urinating
- frequent urination
- blurred vision
- changes in sex drive or ability
- excessive sweating
If you experience any of the following symptoms , call your doctor immediately:
- muscle spasms
- difficult speech
- shuffling walk
- fever
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- skin rash
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- irregular heartbeat
What special precautions should I follow?
- Use
caution when driving
- Antidep (Generic Tofranil) may cause dizziness.
- Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while you are taking
imipramine
- Do not take Antidep (Generic Tofranil) if you have taken a monoamine
oxidase inhibitor such as phenelzine
(Nardil), isocarboxazid (Marplan), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) within the last 2 weeks.
- Before taking Antidep (Generic Tofranil), tell your doctor if you have liver
disease, asthma, thyroid disease, kidney disease, diabetes, stomach
problems, heart disease or high blood pressure.
- Tell your doctor If you had a
heart attack in the last 6 weeks, an enlarged prostate or difficulty
urinatingor glaucoma.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planing to become pregnant, or are
breast-feeding.
